The world is still amid the COVID-19 global pandemic with no clear end in sight. This means that most people are still stuck inside for the foreseeable future. When you’re stuck indoors, it can be tempting to recline on the couch for hours. However, there are plenty of ways to stay active and healthy indoors at home or here at Delaware Court!
Research shows that physical activity can boost mood, extend years onto your life, help you maintain or lose weight, reduce the impact of some illnesses, and enhance motor skills tenfold. Just fifteen minutes of gentle exercise for older adults can significantly improve their health. That’s why we focus on keeping our residents active in our facility.
There are more ways to stay active indoors than you may think! Consider these exercises to add to your quarantine regime:
- Chair Exercises: includes stretching, yoga, armchair pushups, and sit-n-stand exercises.
- Indoor Walking: If you live in a senior living community, walk through the halls several times a day. Ensure the walkway is clear of any hazards like electrical cords or Knick-knacks. Same thing if you’re at home.
- Stretch Exercises: These are possibly the most beneficial and easiest exercises that can be done from the safety of your home. Stretching helps offset the effects of normal decline in joint flexibility. They also help you remain active and independent of any machinery.
- Exercise videos: If you are on the older side, you will remember those old VHS exercise video tapes from the 1980s/90s. Luckily, with advancements in technology, you don’t have to go and dig those up from the basement. Search online for simple workout videos to use at home.
- Balance exercises: These training exercises strengthen the muscles that help keep you upright to improve stability. Preventing falls is also an added benefit.
During the pandemic, these exercises can be a lifesaver for seniors who need to stay isolated. For any tips or if you have a senior who needs assistance, contact Delaware Court at (740) 369-6400 for more information on how we can help.
